Evaluation
I will be explaining the conventions, narrative structure,
mise en scene, camera work, sound and editing that is in the trailer and how I
wanted it to people to interpret the trailer. I will also compare screenshots
of my trailer to a professional trailer and compare the differences and the
similarities and how they imitate a real horror trailer. I will then explain
the use of sound and dialog and how they suit the trailer and give an overall
opinion on the trailer.
The trailer starts off by giving a time and a bit of dialog
about the Baptist saying how he killed a kid, this follows the conventions as
some horror trailers give a sentence of dialog in the trailer to give the
audience information that the Baptist is dangerous and points to them being the
killer. Some scenes play where they are quick cuts and fades are used to build
up a bit more suspense for the watcher, a common thing done in horror trailers
to give as little information as possible. There is also creepy dark satanic
music play as well to add to the creepy mood the trailer gets across. I title
card comes up saying ‘He wants to cleanse your soul.’ Some that horror trailers
do a lot to try and scare the watcher, however real trailers spread an out the
sentence though out the trailer to build up more suspense throughout the
trailer, some that may have improved the trailer a little and make the trailer
last a bit longer. It cuts to present day and anew dialog is spoken about the
Baptist in the current day breaking out of an asylum, once again to build more
suspense up for the scare to be more impactful. It cuts to a person driving
somewhere in a point of view and shot and then another point of view shot of a
person walking, these shots a little lighter than normal but some horror
trailers have a few scenes of a relaxing mood before cutting back to scaring
the watcher, saying that both shots where in an isolated location a common
trope in horror based trailers. I dark shot of the asylum is shown with a cold
breeze sound effect is used to make the place more ominous. The angle of this
shot is aimed upwards to give the build meaning and power and to make the
building important and big to give a threating appearing.
The start of the trailer opens up with a dark satanic music
quietly in the background, this builds up suspense as the trailer is showing
scenes that does the same thing. I chose this music to compliment the fact the
killer is a Baptist. A sound effect was added to the asylum scene to build up suspense
and significance.
